Leadership Blog Part 11: Introducing Environmental Professionals Radio (EPR)

NAEP has a podcast and I love it. Environmental Professionals Radio (EPR) is out now, wherever you get your podcasts (please subscribe!). Full disclosure, I am one of the hosts and therefore biased, but I honestly can’t help but smile when I click the Zoom link and start talking to my new friend and co-host, Laura Thorne. Chemistry is something that is impossible to fake and I worried when she pitched the idea to me that we’d struggle to figure that out. I don’t want to make it sound easy (the effort it takes to put on 30 minutes of content once a week is almost exponentially more than I expected) but we are two environmental enthusiasts that enjoy having a conversation about almost anything so it just works.

What is EPR? It’s a weekly show about the day to day life of environmental professionals and we touch on a wide variety of topics. We will bring you news from the scientific community, NAEP updates, Women in STEM highlights, and amusing conversations about things like the science of movies. We are interviewing industry leaders and curious thinkers, young and old, from all walks of our scientific society. If you are looking for encouragement in your career path, we bring it to you. If you want to hear our take on changes to regulations during the transition between administrations, we will cover it. Even if you want to just tune out from the world around you and enjoy some light-hearted humor, we’ve got you. This show is about connecting the environmental professional community through conversation. At the same time, we aim to humanize our leaders, empower our junior staff, and provide resources to connect our members.

The community around NAEP is what makes this organization so important to me. I love the people in it and have enjoyed getting to know you. This past year has been a tough one for many of us and we’ve all had to adjust and sacrifice. We see this podcast as a way for us to give back to the organization and contribute to its mission in a meaningful way.

Just 3 episodes in, we’re in the top 50% of all podcasts! Your support at the beginning of this endeavor has been amazing. This podcast won’t work without you though, so keep subscribing! This is your show and we are just the voices that bring it to you. There are several ways for you to be involved. Go to our website (https://www.environmentalprofessionalsradio.com) to:

  • Submit a shout out. Give us a new award, degree accomplished, or promotion that you’d like us to highlight on the show.
  • Be a guest. Submit a guest spot request if you’re interested in being on the show
  • Volunteer! Create content and help with social media.
  • Sponsor us! Sponsorships are available from small to large and help make the show a permanent part of this great organization.

As we move forward, the effort to grow our social media presence and membership will tie directly into the show. We’ll give membership updates, establish a blog, and maybe even host our show on Youtube (this is news to Laura, so don’t get too excited yet). The net we cast will be broad and we’ll continue to increase interactivity with you as we add additional support. It’s an ambitious project, but so many of the things we love started with an idea. I know that we’ll bring more faces onto the program and look for creative ways to distill complex information. But the show is really what you’ll make of it.

In so many ways, this podcast is already better than I’d ever hoped it would be. It’s fun to make, fun to listen to (even if I can’t get over hearing the sound of my own voice coming from my phone), and a wild enough ride to keep me engaged. I can’t thank Laura enough for bringing me along on this journey. She’s not here to defend herself and remind me that it takes both of us to do this thing, but that’s what she gets for letting me write this piece. What I’m trying to say is simple. Take a listen. Give us a shot to have some fun with you. Trust us as we roll out this thing that we’ve spent hours (upon hours) researching how to make this as good as we possibly can (we ARE scientists after all, so none of you should be too surprised).

Listen, subscribe, rate, and review. Check out our website. Send us emails. Connect with us on LinkedIn. Tell your friends. Tell your friends to tell their friends. This is something that NAEP can use to reach the greater scientific community and bring in members from areas that are not yet represented. It starts locally. It starts with you. Come hang out with us. Thank you from your friendly neighborhood NEPA nerd.
