Ron Deverman is Associate Vice-President for HNTB, a national engineering, architecture and planning firm, managing environmental impact assessment projects for transportation infrastructure improvements such as transit, passenger and freight rail, roadways, and bridges. Ron has 30-years’ experience in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) with special expertise in community impact assessment, cumulative effects analysis, and federal environmental regulations, such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, National Historic Preservation Act, and Threatened and Endangered Species Act. Ron is currently the HNTB Program Manager assisting IDOT’s Division of Public and Intermodal Transportation for the CREATE Program, a program of 70 rail improvement projects in the Chicago area; Ron is managing all activities for Phase I environmental, Phase II design and Phase III construction (see www.createprogram.org).

His education includes a BS in civil/environmental engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana, an MA in literature and creative writing from the University of Illinois in Springfield, and post-graduate studies in NEPA and related environmental studies. Ron is the Past President of the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP). He has also chaired their national NEPA Symposium, NEPA Working Group, Transportation Working Group (co-founder), Awards Committee and 27th Annual Conference (Dearborn, Michigan), among other positions of leadership. He is currently a Team Leader for NAEP’s Pilot Project with the Council on Environmental Quality – “Best Practice Principles for Environmental Assessments.” Ron is a Past President of IAEP, the Illinois chapter of NAEP, founded in 1975 as one of the original three chapters of NAEP. Ron is a also contributor to the national journal, Environmental Practice, published by Cambridge University Press.

Ron is a published poet and has spoken nationally on many subjects, including key competencies for environmental professionals, environmental stewardship, and preserving the quality of place. He has also spoken at national environmental conferences on the themes, “Reclaiming Our Environmental Imagination” where he incorporated the writings and poems of numerous authors and poets, including his own work, and “Valuing the Sacred” an article on environmental ethics as seen from Western and Eastern cultural perspectives. At the 39th Annual NAEP Conference, Ron was a featured panelists in a session on integrating public health into the transportation infrastructure project development and design processes.

Ron comes from generations of farmers in Illinois’ heartland and has farmed for a living.In 2009, the U of I Alumni Association awarded Ron the John Knoepfle Creative Writing Award for Poetry, a particularly memorable award as John Knoepfle has been a life mentor to Ron since his days at the university.“Since becoming a member in 1990, NAEP has provided me with excellent professional development opportunities, relationships lasting a lifetime, and the exposure to creative, cutting edge methodologies and ideas that continue to boost my career in the most successful and positive ways.”
