Attendee ExperienceAbout CharlestonCharleston, South Carolina, known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, and vibrant cultural scene, is a major tourist destination. Nestled on the southeastern coast, Charleston is famed for its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and pastel historic houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. Getting Around Public Transit: The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) provides bus services throughout the city and surrounding areas. The DASH Trolley is a free service that runs through downtown Charleston, offering a convenient way to see many of the city's main attractions. Biking: Charleston is a bike-friendly city with several rental options available. Bike lanes and bike paths are common, particularly in downtown areas. Walking: Charleston is highly walkable, especially in the historic downtown area. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as many streets are paved with cobblestones. It takes about 20-30 minutes to walk from one end of downtown to the other. Important Tips Public Restrooms: Free public-use restrooms are not abundant in Charleston, so it's best to plan ahead. Restrooms are available in most restaurants, bars, and attractions for paying customers. Ticketed EventsSCORE Oyster Reef Build | Monday, April 28, 2025 | $25.00 Join us in the marsh for an Oyster Reef Build! NAEP has partnered with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the South Carolina Oyster Recycling and Enhancement (SCORE) program, to offer an opportunity for you to help enhance the marsh in Charleston, SC. SCORE is a program within SCDNR that bags recycled oyster shells and uses those to create oyster reefs along SC coast. The reefs provide habitat for numerous species and help prevent erosion in the marshes. It's dirty and wet work with lots of moving and lifting, but it is a ton of fun! SCORE is a grant-based program, so the fees associated with this field trip will be donated to SCORE.

The Charleston Tea Garden is located on picturesque Wadmalaw Island, SC in the heart of the Lowcountry. Wadmalaw, one of the area’s most untouched islands, was first claimed for England in 1666 by Captain Robert Sanford. Today, it remains protected from commercial development, preserving its natural beauty. The island’s only connection to the mainland is a single bridge over Church Creek, making it a truly special destination. With its sandy soil, subtropical climate, and abundant rainfall, Wadmalaw provides the perfect environment for growingCamellia Sinensis, the tea plant used for both black and green teas. The Charleston Tea Garden spans 127 acres and cultivates over 320 varieties, producing nine unique flavors, including the beloved American Classic Tea—the only tea in the world made entirely from U.S.-grown leaves. You may visit their website for more information: Welcome to Charleston Tea Garden | 100% American Tea Along the way, you will also make a quick 20-minute stop at Angel Oak Park where you can view the majestic Angel Oak Tree, the largest live oak tree east of the Mississippi River, and one of the oldest living things in the country, estimated at 400 to 500 years old! The tree is approximately 65 feet high with a circumference of over 25 feet. Its branches shade an area of 17,000 square feet with its longest branch reaching over 187 feet in length. The group tour will begin with a greeting from a staff member, and will include a 15-minute factory tour overlooking the production facility to learn how tea leaves are processed into tea, and an approximately 40-minute trolley tour with a stop at the greenhouse, where you will learn about how tea is grown and harvested. All are also welcome to enjoy complimentary hot or iced tea from the “tea bar”, walk the beautiful grounds, shop in the gift shop, or sit on the large front porch overlooking the acres of tea plants. Registration includes transportation to and from the Charleston Tea Plantation. The bus will pick up registered attendees from the conference hotel at 1:00 PM on Sunday, April 27.
