Port Everglades Environmental Program
Tuesday, August 25 10:00–10:45 AM PT | 1:00–1:45 PM ET
About the Session
Port Everglades, located in Greater Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is the sole source of fuel for the population of eight million in Southeast Florida, the eleventh largest freight port in the United States, and the third largest cruise ship port in the world. Our mission statement directs us to achieve advancements focusing on efficient facilities, trade and cruise expansion, jobs growth, safety, security and environmental stewardship for our customers, stakeholders and community. The total value of our economic activity is $34 billion, involving more than 230,000 jobs of which 13,000 provide direct services to Port Everglades. Our Environmental Program ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and those specifically related to natural resources, air and water quality, and hazardous substances. However, it also excels at implementing many environmental stewardship initiatives, as directed by our mission statement. Some examples of these initiatives include voluntarily participating in the Green Marine certification program, voluntarily collaborating with the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a comprehensive air emissions inventory and develop nationwide reduction strategies, voluntarily collaborating with climate change organizations and implementing sustainability strategies, voluntarily optimizing wildlife habitat value in available green spaces and modifying infrastructure to minimize disruptions to protected species, and utilizing an art in public places program to inspire our four million annual visitors to appreciate our local flora and fauna. This presentation will provide an introduction to Port Everglades, which is immediately adjacent to the conference location, an overview of our environmental compliance requirements, and details of our environmental stewardship initiatives. Narrated bus and/or boat tours of the Port Everglades Environmental Program can also be coordinated.
